Tesoro Logistics was created to serve its parent. The company, a spinoff of oil refiner Tesoro Corporation, owns and operates US crude oil gathering, transportation, and storage facilities. Its trucks and 700 miles of Montana and North Dakota pipeline serve Tesoro's Mandan refinery while eight refined product terminals hold petroleum in California, Utah, Washington, Alaska, and North Dakota. Tesoro Logistics' primary storage facility, in Salt Lake City, holds 880,000 barrels of crude and refined petroleum. In 2016 it announced plans to invest $1.1 billion to beef up its midstream business. That year it agreed to buy two natural gas processing plants in North Dakota from Whiting Petroleum for $700 million.
