Wheelabrator Technologies operates municipal-waste incinerators and trash-to-steam plants that convert more than 7 million tons of municipal solid waste annually into energy. Wheelabrator operates four power plants and 15 waste-to-energy facilities that burn solid waste to produce high-pressure steam; the facilities generate more than 700 MW of electricity -- enough to power some 650,000 homes. Streamlining to save costs and raise cash, in late 2014 Waste Management sold Wheelabrator Technologies to an affiliate of Energy Capital Partners, Granite Acquisition, for $1.94 billion.
