Some of the hot air in the US capital is courtesy of WGL Holdings. The holding company's Washington Gas Light utility (Washington Gas) distributes natural gas to more than 1 million customers in Washington, DC, and adjacent areas of Maryland and Virginia. WGL Holdings' nonregulated operations include Washington Gas Energy Services (WGES), which sells natural gas and electricity to 355,000 retail customers in unregulated markets within the utility's service area and beyond. Other operations include HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning) services and natural gas exploration, production, and storage. In 2017 the company agreed to be bought by Canada-based AltaGas in a $6.4 billion deal.
