The Hartz Mountain Corporation
Hartz has mountains of products for pets. The company makes and markets more than 2,000 pet care products, including nutritional supplements for birds and fish, over-the-counter animal healthcare items, and toys and training aids for dogs and cats. It also caters to ferrets, reptiles, chinchillas, guinea pigs, hamsters, and rabbits. Hartz Mountain's pet products are sold through some 100,000 specialty retailers across North America as well as online. Founded by German immigrant Max Stern in 1926, Hartz Mountain is 51%-owned by Japanese household and pet goods maker Unicharm, which acquired its majority stake from trading giant Sumitomo in 2011.
