Surgical Care Affiliates can stitch 'em up and move 'em out. The company operates one of the largest networks of outpatient surgery centers in the US. (Also known as ambulatory surgical centers, or ASCs, these facilities charge less than hospitals to perform routine surgeries.) Surgical Care Affiliates operates about 195 surgery centers, six surgical hospitals, and one sleep center with about a dozen locations. Its facilities are located in about 35 states, and offer non-emergency day surgeries in orthopedics, ophthalmology, gastroenterology, pain management, otolaryngology (ear, nose and throat), urology, and gynecology. The company went public in 2013. Insurance giant UnitedHealth now plans to buy Surgical Care Affiliates for some $2.3 billion.
