Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group (SMFG) is the holding company for Sumitomo Mitsui Banking, which boasts some 440 domestic branches (mostly in the Tokyo and Osaka regions of Japan) and another nearly 40 locations abroad. As one of Japan's largest banks, SMFG provides retail, corporate, and investment banking; asset management; securities trading; and lending. Other units of SMFG include credit card firm Sumitomo Mitsui Card, brokerage SMBC Friend Securities, management consulting firm Japan Research Institute, and Sumitomo Mitsui Finance and Leasing. SMFG also operates the California-based Manufacturers Bank. SMFG bought  Citigroup's Japanese consumer-banking business in late 2014.
