Its can-do attitude has helped make Rio Tinto Alcan one of the world's largest aluminum producers, along with Russia's RUSAL and the US's Alcoa. As a subisdiary of Rio Tinto, Alcan participates in all facets of aluminum production, mining bauxite, refining alumina, and making aluminum sheet, foil, wire and cable, and extrusions (doors, windows, auto parts). Rio Tinto Alcan also generates hydroelectric power and makes specialty chemicals and packaging products. The company runs its business through two business units: primary metal and bauxite and alumina. It produces about 45 million metric tons of bauxite, 7 million metric tons of alumina, and 3 million metric tons of aluminum products annually. Rio Tinto Alcan has aluminum operations in Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Guinea, Iceland, New Zealand, Oman, and the UK.
