Opko Health may have first found its calling in developing treatments for eye diseases, but it has expanded its scope to include a variety of therapeutics. In addition to research and development of its ophthalmic drug candidates, the company is working on pharmaceuticals for indications including oncology, neurology, and infectious diseases. It also has development programs for vaccines and diagnostic tests. To support its research programs, Opko Health sells a number of prescription pharmaceuticals and over-the-counter products in Latin American countries. A private investment group led by the company's chairman and CEO Phillip Frost owns about 45% of Opko.
