Gone are the days when one-eyed, peg-legged buccaneers counted their steps to where X marked the spot of lost treasure. Odyssey Marine Exploration, a new breed of treasure hunter, uses sonar, magnetometers, and remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) to locate and excavate shipwrecks. The company focuses on deepwater projects where the booty is less susceptible to damage and less likely to have been salvaged. Odyssey Marine Exploration surveys and maps seabeds too; its experience covers more than 10,000 sq. mi. The company sells artifacts salvaged from shipwrecks -- most recently, thousands of silver and gold coins from an Atlantic Ocean site code-named Black Swan. Two coin dealers represent more than half of sales.
