When it gets off the ground, ICO Global Communications will be a satellite-based communications system with global coverage. Operating subsidiary DBSD North America (formerly ICO North America) is authorized to operate a medium-Earth-orbit satellite service to provide mobile voice, data, and Internet services primarily in the US. In addition to telephone and messaging capabilities, its consumer-oriented service is slated to deliver mobile entertainment content and interactive navigation data to wireless computing devices and vehicle navigation systems. DBSD North America filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in mid-2009; DISH Network offered to buy the debt-laden company for about $1 billion in 2011.
