Heritage Bankshares comes from a long line of money. Heritage Bankshares is the holding company for Heritage Bank & Trust, a community-based institution in Virginia with about half a dozen branches in Chesapeake, Norfolk, and Virginia Beach. The bank, which opened in the mid-1970s, offers standard banking products and services, including checking and savings accounts, debit cards, CDs, and IRAs. Real estate loans, primarily mortgages, account for the largest portion of its loan portfolio; the bank also originates loans for businesses, individuals, and municipalities. The bank offers insurance and investment services through its subsidiary, Sentinel Financial. North Carolina-based Southern BancShares acquired Heritage in January 2016.
