Government Properties Income Trust
If Government Properties Income Trust had one request of Uncle Sam it would be this: "I want you to lease our properties." As a real estate investment trust (REIT), Government Properties Income Trust invests in properties that are leased to government tenants. It owns 3 million sq. ft. of leasing space at some 30 properties, many of which are located in the Washington, D.C. area and other states. The company leases mostly to federal agencies (such as the FBI, IRS, and FDA), but it does lease to some state-run agencies as well. Government Properties Income Trust went public in 2009. Former majority owner HRPT Properties Trust owns about 30% of the company following the IPO.
