Gemalto is trying to make the digital world more secure. The company offers end-to-end digital security products and services, from developing operating systems and software to designing and producing personal devices, such as contactless payment cards, electronic passports, smart cards and card readers, subscriber identification modules (SIMs), and universal integrated circuit cards (UICCs) in mobile phones. It also offers managed services to customers. Gemalto markets to both the public and private sectors worldwide, including those in the banking, mass transit, multimedia, and wireless telecommunications industries. In 2016 it agreed to buy 3M's identity management business for $850 million.
