A land of long distances needs good long distance service. Through its operating subsidiaries, General Communication, Inc. (GCI) provides facilities-based phone services to more than 144,000 local callers and 97,000 long-distance customers in the five largest population areas of Alaska: Anchorage, Fairbanks, Juneau, the Matanuska-Susitna Valley, and the Kenai Peninsula. The competitive local-exchange carrier is also one of Alaska's leading cable TV providers, with more than 147,000 basic cable subscribers; it provides wireless services to 138,000-plus customers through a partnership with AT&T Mobility. More than 116,000 subscribers receive cable modem service.
