Fonar Corporation
SONAR finds objects hidden under the water using sound waves; FONAR uses magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to find disease or injury hidden inside the body. The company was the first to market a commercial MRI scanner in 1980, and it is trying to stay at the forefront of the field. Its primary products include the Upright MRI, which scans patients in sitting, standing, or bending positions, and the FONAR 360, a room-sized MRI. Both systems do away with the claustrophobia-producing enclosed tubes of traditional machines. Additionally, FONAR's Health Management Corporation of America (HMCA) subsidiary provides management services to 10 diagnostic imaging centers, primarily in Florida and New York.
