If college students can check out books at the library, why can’t they check out textbooks for the semester? With Chegg, they finally can. Chegg operates an online library that rents out textbooks to cash-strapped students; it has 180,000 titles in its library and another 100,000 e-textbook titles from major publishers such as Cengage Learning, Elsevier, McGraw-Hill, and Pearson. In addition, the company’s Student Hub offers educational support services such as homework help and a central database to find scholarship opportunities. Chegg also offers enrollment marketing services to about 800 universities, including Duke, Princeton, Rutgers, and UCLA. Formed in 2005, Chegg went public in 2013.
