Bay State Gas distributes natural gas to about 300,000 customers in 60 communities throughout Massachusetts. Columbia Gas of Massachusetts also provides energy products and services, including heating system installation and maintenance and water heater and conversion burner rentals. In response to Massachusetts' deregulation measures, the company also offers a customer choice program. Columbia Gas of Massachusetts is a wholly owned subsidiary of energy power player NiSource. The company changed its name in 2010 to be consistent NiSource's other regional utilities.
