Ashland's three business units are built on chemicals and cars. Ashland Performance Materials makes specialty resins, polymers, and adhesives. Specialty Ingredients makes cellulose ethers, vinyl pyrrolidones and biofunctionals. It offers industry-leading products, technologies and resources for solving formulation and product-performance challenges. Consumer Markets, led by subsidiary Valvoline, runs an oil-change chain in the US and sells Valvoline oil and Zerex antifreeze. The company's Ashland Specialty Ingredients unit produces polymers and additives for the food, personal care, pharmaceutical, and other industries. In 2016 Ashland spun off Valvoline.
