American Superconductor Corporation
American Superconductor (AMSC) gets a charge out of carrying a heavy load. The company has two units -- AMSC Power Systems and AMSC Superconductors. AMSC Power Systems makes electronic converters for wind turbines and electrical transmitters that modulate power faster than electromechanical switches. AMSC Superconductors makes high-temperature superconductor (HTS) wire used in the electrical control systems for wind turbines; it accounts for less than 5% of sales. Austrian subsidiary AMSC Windtec designs wind turbines and supports wind turbine manufacturers. Customers in the Asia/Pacific region account for more than 85% of sales. MIT professors Gregory Yurek and John Vander Sande formed AMSC in 1987.
