Through about 250 stores in about 30 states, the company (which is one of the largest privately held building materials retailers in the US) sells lumber, siding, drywall, windows, and other supplies, as well as plans to construct decks, garages, and houses. Its 84 Components subsidiary operates plants that make floor and roof trusses and wall panels. In addition, 84 Lumber provides insurance, travel, and professional installation services. Joseph Hardy Sr. founded 84 Lumber in 1956.
