when it comes to workplace attire, black is the way to go, at least for women.
some 51% of female senior executives typically wear black clothes to work, compared to just 18% of men, according to a 2011 survey of 561 managers fromcareerbuilder. (hat tip: harvard business review.)
men meanwhile, prefer blue in the executive suite; some 41% of male managers typically wear navy to work.
as a working mom, black should be a no-brainer. it’s slimming, professional and simple to match. the downside: easy to stain with kid detritus.
but in austin, texas, where we experience three months of triple-digit heat, black’s not always a practical option. i’ve been leaning more toward navy and white, preferring the “nautical chic” look for business-casual events. (i love classic blue and white stripes.) luckily i work from home, so i usually get by wearing yoga pants and tee-shirts.
meanwhile, the survey found that most senior executives—63%–wear business casual to work; only 14% wear suits.
